God gave him a bag of snakes and ordered to throw it into a pit (яма). But men think that gold is hidden in a bag, and untied it. Snake crawled (ползти) and hid. God then turned the man into a stork, and ordered to collect snakes across the land. Since storks walk the swamps (болото) and collect reptiles. We believe that storks settle only for good people. If the stork made a nest on the roof of the house, the inhabitants of this house will live happily ever after. Therefore, people are helping to equip storks nest. They put a wooden wheel on the roof or on a tall tree. Stork arrives and creates a nest on this wheel.  A good sign we have in our country. Storks fly back to Belarus in the spring. The man who sees the first flying stork, will be happy the whole year. If a person is hurt stork, then other people will punish him. We call this flower gently and lovingly: valoshka or vasiliok.  Since ancient times, Belarusians think this blue flower symbol of happiness and longevity (долголетие). Slavic legend explains the origin of the name. One siren fell in love with a young man named Vasil. But he did not answer her feelings and refused to follow her to the underwater kingdom. Love siren offended (обиделась) and turned the young man in a blue flower, which came to be called by its name - vasiliok (cornflower). It is a symbol of Belarus, a symbol of purity (чистота).  Image of cornflower found in many Belarusian sites, it decorates products of Belarusian factories. Cornflower has become the symbol of the festival "Slavic Bazaar". Probably no one would answer the question of why cornflowers have taken root in the Belarusian culture. Why are they so often found in the shirts, belts, napkins (салфетки). Without cornflowers is difficult to imagine these things. Perhaps this reflects the nature of flower Nation? Humility, kindness, hospitality, simplicity ... valoshka has long been a symbol of the art of Belarus, the realization (воплощение) of creativity.

Friendship
What is friendship? Some people will say that it is a feeling of mutual (взаимная) liking between two or more people, other will add that it is a state when one person understands and supports the other one.

To my mind friendship can be compared to a tree. Its seed (семя) should find good soil and under good conditions it will grow into a tree. As the years go by the tree stands firmer (устойчивее) and firmer on the ground. And if it is strong enough, it will survive all the storms and winds. But to help it, we should take care of it and love it.
The most important feeling that exists between friends is trust. It never appears by itself, it's the result of a long friendship and this feeling is very valuable. Respect and tolerance are also very important; it means that you don't criticize your friend's way of living, but try to understand him, discuss problems with him and explain to him what you think is good and what is bad. A friend is a person who can help you in time, lend you any sum of money for a long period of time without any percent, whom you can wake up in the middle of the night just to say you feel worried or who will do everything for you waiting nothing in return, who supports you in all your beginnings and who will never betray (предавать) you.
Lucky are those people who have friends. I'm happy to have lots of friends, too. Some of them are very close, some are less. But all of them make my life interesting and enjoyable.
I appreciate friendship. It makes happiness grow brighter and grief (горе) less painful, because we have friends to share it with. And we trust our friends and we are grateful to them. Friendship is a bridge between loneliness and fellowship, despair and hope, setbacks (неудачи) and success. That's why a true friend is a priceless gift. They are rich who have true friends, says a proverb and I agree.
I. Complete the sentences:
1. Friendship is a feeling of … .
2. Friendship can be compared to… .
3. … is the most important feeling that exists between friends.
4. …. and … are also very important between friends.
5. A friend is a person who… .
6. Friendship makes happiness grow … and grief less … .
7. Friendship is a bridge between … and …,… and …, ….and … .
II. Translate into English:
1.Взаимная симпатия. 2.
III.Answer the questions:
1. What is friendship? 2. What should we do to help friendship? 3. What is the most important feeling that exists between friends? 4. What does respect and tolerance in friendship mean? 5. Who is a friend? 6. A true friend is a priceless gift. Why?

The UK is a real attraction for tourists. It’s full of beauty and contrasts, ranging from the Northwest Highlands and the Grampian mountains of Scotland to the lowlands in the south and east of England. Ben Nevis in Scotland is the highest mountain. Its landscape is extremely varied. Famous People of Belarus.
There are many famous people in our republic. Among them you can find the names of politicians and public figures, intellectuals and scientists, heroes of war and labor, sportsmen and artists.
First of all I'd like to mention the name of our outstanding national writers Yanka Kupala and Yakub Kolas. They created a new Belarusian Literature and a Belarusian literature language. Both are considered to be the classics of Belarusian literature.
These names are followed by a number of other well-known writers and poets, such as K.Krapiva, Chorny, Brovka, Shamyakin, Tank, Bykov, Korotkevich, Gilevich, Loyka, Adamovich known both in our country and abroad. Their works are translated into many European languages.
Many Minsk streets are named after the Belarusian writers.
The cultural life of Belarus has always been very interesting and varied. Among the leading composers of the present century were Tikotsky, Aladov, Bogatyrov, Smolsky. Other well-known composers of the older generation include Luchenok, Alovnikov, etc.
Many prominent names in the history of Belarus of the 20th century are connected with the two main events, the Second World War and space exploration. The Belarusians fought heroically defending their Motherland.
But we are especially proud of the heroes of the last war: K.Zaslonov, E.Osipova, N.Gastello, V.Talalikhin, the defenders of Brest Fortess and many others. In the family of cosmonauts there are also two Belarussians, A.Kovalyonok and P.Klimuk.
At the present day time it's difficult to find heroes. But one thing is obvious: great times are created by great men. Their names are sure to become history.
Kastus Kalinovsky the Fighter for Independence of Belarus.
K. Kalinovsky was born in 1838 on the 21-st of January not far from Grodno in Belarus. His parents were not rich. There were 18 children in the family. Kalinovsky's mother Veronica Rybinskaya died early and the elder brother, Victor, a student of Moscow University, took care of Kastus. In 1855 Kastus graduated from a secondary school in Svisloch and entered Moscow University.
But in 1856 he changed his mind and became a student of St. Petersburg University. There Kalinovsky met Russian democrats Belynsky, Chernyshevsky, Dobrolubov. He shared their ideas and followed them. In 1861 K. Kalinovsky came back to Belarus. He took an active part in organizing the uprising of 1863 in Belarus and Lithuania.
But the tsarist army broke up the uprising. In 1864 Kastus Kalinovsky was arrested as the learder of the uprising. He fought for national independence of Byelorussian people, the development of national culture and education.
His name became a symbol of action and struggle for the rights of oppressed people in Belarus and Lithuania.

Form 7. Shopping.
When we want to buy something we go to a shop. There are many kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a food supermarket, a department store, men’s and women’s clothing stores, grocery, a bakery and a butchery.

I like to do my shopping at big department stores and supermarkets. They sell various goods under one roof and this is very convenient. A department store, for example, true to its name, is composed of many departments: ready-made clothes, fabrics, shoes, sports goods, toys, china and glass, electric appliances, cosmetics, curtains, cameras, records, etc. You can buy everything you like there.
There are also escalators in big stores which take customers to different floors. The things for sale are on the counters so, that they can be easily seen. In the women’ clothing department you can find dresses, costumes, blouses, skirts, coats and many other things. In the men’s clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, overcoats, ties, etc. In the knitwear department one can buy sweaters, cardigans, short-sleeved and long-sleeved pullovers, woolen jackets. In the perfumery they sell face cream and powder, lipstick, lotions and shampoos.
In a food supermarket we can also buy many different things at once: sausages, fish, sugar, macaroni, flour, tea. At the butcher’s there is a wide choice of meat and poultry. At the bakery you buy brown and white bread, rolls, biscuits. Another shop we frequently go to is the greengrocery where you can buy cabbages, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, carrots, beetroots, green peas and what not. Everything is sold here ready-weighed and packed. Аt a dairy you can buy milk, cream, cheese, butter and many other products.
The methods of shopping differ. It may be a self-service shop where the customer goes from counter to counter selecting and putting into a basket what he wishes to buy. Then he takes the basket to the check-out counter, where the prices of the purchases are added up. If it’s not a self-service shop, and most small shops are not, the shop-assistant helps the customer in finding what he wants. You pay money to the cashier and he gives you back the change.

How do you make new friends?
How many people do you consider your “best friends”?
Do you have any early childhood friendship that is still strong today? Tell about it.
What things should friends never do?
Do you think you can find true friendships through the internet?

Friendship and relationship with friends (Form 7).
I am absolutely sure that friendship is the most fascinating and important thing in the world. They are rich who have true friends. Friends give us so many moments of happiness and satisfaction. They make our life full of joy and pleasure. That’s why we should value friendship. We should treat our friends with respect and love.
I have a lot of friends. But my best friend is … (name). We’ve been classmates since the first form. My friend is charming and friendly. She’s (he’s) got green eyes, long eyelashes and straight blond hair. She’s (he’s) quite tall, a bit taller than I am. We get on well. I’m happy we can always rely on each other.
I think my friend is easy to deal with. We have a lot in common: we are both interested in fashion, we’re crazy about surfing the Net and we like good music. We spend much time together. It gives us a chance to share happiness or sadness with each other. Sometimes we fall out but it doesn’t last long. We take care of each other.
Good friends are like stars. You don’t always see them, but you know they are always there. I believe that true friendship will save the world.

Physical culture and sports, Form7.
1. I am sure that doing sports is the best way to keep fit. There is always a kind of sport which will suit you and there are many different kinds to choose from. If you like team games, try hockey, football, volleyball or basketball. Games for you to play with a friend include badminton, tennis, and if you enjoy doing things on your own, you may take up swimming, riding, golf or athletics.
Different sports may be done at different times of the year-athletics and water sports in summer, skiing and skating in winter. We can also play many sports indoors.
Sport is given a great deal of attention all over the world as it helps to bring up strong and healthy people. It makes people more self-organized and better disciplined.
Men have always wanted to prove who is the strongest, the quickest, the highest. In ancient Greece the Olympic Games were held every four year. The winner was given a branch of wild olive and that was the greatest honour.
Belarusian athletes took part in the Olympics in 1952 for the first time and have been their active participants since then. The greatest results in the Olympic games achieved Belarusian sportsmen. They are Olga Korbut (in gymnastics), Alexander Medvedev (in weightlifting), Igor Makarov (in judo), Julia Nesterenko (in athletics), Maxim Mirnyj (in tennis), Darya Domracheva (in biathlon).
Britain has a rich sports history too. The most popular sports include athletics, golf, motorsport and horse racing.

2. As for me, I’m not a sporty person in the true sense of the word. I don’t take much interest in sports. But I regularly attend PE lessons at which I jump, run and play games. As a fan I do have my favorite sport, which is figure skating. I’ve never done it myself, but I love watching it. I’m always fascinated by the grace, speed and skills of the skaters and how well they can dance on the ice.
ИЛИ
2. I personally can’t imagine my life without sport. I go jogging every day and cycle twice a week. Sometimes I play badminton with my friend. My favorite sport is basketball. I love it because it’s a team game and requires all kinds of skills. You must do your best and keep eye on what your partners are doing and you need a quick brain. In future I want to do climbing or car racing or even wind-surfing.

Travelling Back in Time. Reading Test, Form 7.
If I were given a chance to travel back in time, I would definitely choose going back to Ancient Egypt, the period during which the pyramids were built. It is a wonderful page in the world's history. I have read and heard so much about it that I would like to see it.
I would go back to that period of time to see how people of Ancient Egypt lived. For example, how they dressed, how they made masks for the mummies and so on. It would be like a heritage show for me. Egyptian mummies are gruesome and disgusting, but the process of making mummies is surprising. I would definitely not choose to see how mummies were made but rather like to watch the beautiful carvings inside the pyramids.
I would also like to see Tutankhamun; I would like to find out if myths and stories about him and about other pharaohs are true.
In addition, I would also like to bring something home as a souvenir from those times. Maybe, a mask. The masks the leaders wore were so beautiful and special. The gold and blue coloured mask of Tutankamun is one of my favorites, if I could I would get it for myself.
Different movies show the beauty inside the pyramids, but these pictures are computer graphics, I suppose. I would like to see with my own eyes what the inside of the pyramids look like. I would photograph everything, of course, or shoot a video.
In conclusion, books give us a lot of exciting information about Egyptian history but I am sure seeing it would be better. All the stories I read about Ancient Egypt only increase my anxiety to travel back to that period. So if I could, I would definitely choose the time when the pyramids were being built.
How much did you understand?

3. Which way to study history is the best according to the author? (Give one answer).

New Year in Belarus.
New Year is a great holiday in our country. Everybody likes it very much. It is especially loved by little children. People do not go to work on that day, and children do not go to school. This holiday is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home among the members of the family.
People decorate their houses and usually have a fir-tree which stands in the corner of the room. Those fir-trees are very beautiful. The presents are usually put under these trees. Our parents prepare to this holiday well. They buy a New Year tree, decorate it, buy a lot of tasty food and drinks.
At twelve o’clock in the night people can see the president on TV which addresses them with traditional words of congratulation. At this time people are sitting at the tables to their holiday dinner and enjoy it in a good company. Young people usually organize a dance party and have a lot of fun. Some of them go out into the streets and the squares. The next day friends usually come to wish a Happy New Year to all the members of the family. The New Year of our life has begun. Everyone hopes it will really be happy.

My Everyday Meals.
Every person likes different food.
I usually have two or three meals a day on weekdays and four meals on my day off. I don't often have a dinner when I'm at school. My meals are: breakfast, lunch, dinner and tea.
Some of my friends have a snack (перекус) instead of a meal in the morning. But my breakfast is a full meal and I have it at 7 o'clock. It is usually bacon and eggs. Then come sandwiches with butter and cheese or sausages, or sometimes jam. Then I drink tea or coffee.
I have lunch at about 12 o'clock. It starts with fruit juice. Then I have a salad and sandwiches with tea.
Dinner is at three or four o'clock. For dinner I have soup and meat or fish with vegetables (овощи) for main course. For dessert I often have jelly.

And at last supper. It is at seven or eight. My mother usually cooks fried fish and potatoes. And salads, of course. Then I prefer a glass of milk with a cake. Sometimes before going to bed I drink orange juice or eat an apple.

My favourite singer (form 8).
Rihanna
I love music and I can say that I’m fond of a lot of music styles. It depends on my mood: sometimes I need some energetic and light disco music but I can also enjoy classical, lyrical or jazz pieces of music as well.  And there is one singer I can listen to at any time. Her name is Rihanna.
My love for her started several years ago. It was in 2007 when I turned on the radio and the DJ said: “Here is a new single from Rihanna.” I fell in love with that song immediately. The young girl was singing “The umbrella”. The tune was very catchy, the voice was so soft and deep. I couldn’t help dancing and singing along with her. That song became a hit at once and it was one of the best-selling singles of all time.
My favourite singer was born in 1988 in Barbados and her full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty. Today she has released 7 studio albums so far and has already sold more than 150 million records worldwide. Rihanna has earned numerous music awards. She always gets stadiums full of her fans. I also dream of visiting her concert some day and dance to her tremendous songs in reggae, hip-hop and R’n’B styles. The lyrics in her songs are quite meaningful and romantic.
Rihanna is a very beautiful and talented person. She is not just a singer with a powerful voice, she is also an actress and a successful fashion designer.
Justin Timberlake
I like music very much. There are several bands and singers that I especially enjoy listening. However, if I were asked who my favourite singer is, I would answer – Justin Timberlake. In my opinion, he is not only a gifted singer but also a good actor. His songs are all rather melodic. I have once seen one of his concerts and I should say it was an amazing show.
Justin Timberlake was born in Memphis, on January 31st, 1981. He was singing and dancing from the very childhood and his musical idol was Michael Jackson. At the age of eleven he appeared on one TV show with a country music song. A bit later he became a cast member in the Mickey Mouse Club together with such future stars as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and JC Chasez.
In 1995 the boy band ‘N Sync was formed where Justin Timberlake became members. Their debut album was released in 1998. It was called ‘N Sync and in October of the same year it won the second place in the US hit parade. The album was sold in 10 million copies. In late 1999, Timberlake made his acting debut in the Disney Channel. Gradually, he became the idol of many young people.
His solo career began in 2002 with a song “Like I Love You”, which he performed at the MTV Video Music Awards. His debut solo album was called “Justified”. He has released several other albums since then. Justin is married to Jessica Biel, who is a famous actress. Apart from television work,Justin is involved in some business ventures and philanthropy. For instance, he owns three restaurants in the USA and he has been active in several charitable pursuits. He also set up his clothing line. I like almost all his songs but my favourite one is “Cry Me a River”.

FAMILY (Form 9)
Speaking about my family I should say that it means the world to me. I would do anything in the world for them because they mean that much to me. My parents are the most important people in the world. Sometimes I can seem ungrateful but I appreciate everything they have done for me. They are always on my side no matter if I’m right or wrong.

He is always busy and to tell the truth I’ve not many opportunities to see him very often. My dad is a breadwinner in the family.
As for my mother she is a good-looking woman in her early (mid/late) forties with straight (curly, wave) brown (blond, dark) hair. She doesn’t look her age. She works as a … and likes her profession very much. She is gorgeous, charming and kind-hearted. I always help her with the housework.

I’m pretty sure I’ve got a close-knit family. First of all we have much in common, we enjoy each others company. Secondly, we can always rely on each other. We have misunderstandings very seldom. We do our best to avoid conflicts. Support of the family is what I value most, for it helps me to deal with life better. My parents are always ready to give me a shoulder to cry on. It makes me feel more confident and secure. We like going out, talking, watching TV together.
